The term Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has been given to represent a new way of looking at farms, food and local economies. A direct association developed between consumers and farmers sees to it that the food dollars are going directly to the farm in exchange for a weekly share of the harvest throughout the growing season. CSA bridges the gap between urban and rural, and reconnects people with the source of their food. Below you will find descriptions and contact information for many active CSA farms in Kentucky.

Paul and Alison Wiediger of Au Naturel Farm have been growing produce using organic methods from the early 1970's. Our 84-acre farm is located in South Central Kentucky, just off I-65 in Edmonson County. It has been managed organically since 1989. On our farm we raise grass-finished beef using rotational grazing methods and we market the beef directly to consumers. We also have a flock of free-range layers for eggs and raise pastured broilers for meat that we direct market to our customer list. We grow vegetables and cut flowers on about two acres during the spring, summer and fall. We also utilize 8400 square feet of unheated high tunnels for the production of gourmet salad greens all winter long, selling to customers via an email distribution list. top

Next spring we will offer grass-finished beef for the first time. 2007 is the first year of CSA production. We will grow a wide variety of herbs and vegetables (see listing at www.localharvest.org/farms/M15623), as well as gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. The garden is small-scale in intensive production using double-dug raised beds. We grow healthy food on remineralized soil. We inspire forest and soil life cycles to build a happy, microbially rich soil. top

Serving Monroe and Allen Co.'s Nashville, TN and Macon Co., TN

We are blessed with great neighbors and a dynamic landscape of pasture, woodland, water and wildlife. Bugtussle is a small community whose name comes from the elusive dung beetle that 'tussles' balls of manure and buries them in the soil. Consequently they enhance fertility. We think of them as little farmers. We've adopted them as our farm mascot. We, too, are here to build soil. We raise 1 1/2 acres of vegetables, have honey bees, and raise a large flock of laying hens rotated on pasture with goats. We are building good friendship with our shareholders. Nothing could be more satisfying than laboring to produce good food and directly getting to see the smile on some one's face as they receive it. Getting to know them commits us to produce the purest, tastiest, and healthiest food. It is deeply satisfying to know we are directly involved in their health and well being. top

Field Day Family Farm
Carol Gundersen

cagundersen@yahoo.com

Field Day Family Farm is a commercial organic (though we have opted against N.O.P. certification, at this point) produce operation entering its tenth year. Over a 9-10 month season, the farm runs a forty family CSA, 3 farmer's markets, and serves 10-15 stores and restaurants in the Louisville, KY area. The farm's 6-8 acres of ground are a part of one of Louisville's and Jefferson County's oldest farms and could, perhaps, best be described as a kind of rural oasis in what is otherwise an increasingly commercial and highly suburban environment. top
