InternshipsThe role of the intern or apprentice is vital to the success of small-scale sustainable agriculture and the re-enlivening of the family farm. In the past, all knowledge was passed from one generation to the next through the relationship of either parent and child or mentor and apprentice. In our modern society, these relationships have lost importance in favor of the more centralized, formal educational structure. The role of an intern or apprentice on an organic or biodynamic farm is still very much alive and the interest in this type of learning experience is actually growing each year. Disillusioned with the information received in the more formal settings, thousands of young and old farmers of the future are flocking to farms around the country and working the land with their chosen mentors for a season or longer. Having learned all that I know as an intern on many farms around the world and in this county, I truly value the experience and consider it integral to the future of sustainable agriculture. As the director of The Rural Center, I have worked and will continue to work with local farmers to establish successful internship programs and collaborative educational opportunities.
